St Georges Church

WE DRIVE PAST ST GEORGE’S CHURCH

Battery Point is also home to St. George's Anglican Church, a Neo-Classical landmark designed by the same architect who worked on Parliament House, John Lee Archer. Built of sandstone in 1838, its Greek Revival bell tower and Doric portico were added later based on the designs of James Blackburn.

St. George's Anglican Church is located at the highest point of Battery Point and its tower once served as a navigational landmark for ships travelling up the Derwent River. Today, it is an active site of worship for Hobart’s Anglican community and still has its original cedar pew boxes.
