Fountain Roundabout near ABC

WE DRIVE PAST

In front of the ABC building in Hobart is an award-winning roundabout, which was originally constructed in 1963 for the city's primary railway station. It was known as the Railway Roundabout and was built amidst a network of tunnels for pedestrians to travel from the station to the city.

Designed as a memorial and engraved with the names of former mayors, the fountain exhibits an Art Deco style. It is sometimes described as “space age” as many people think it resembles a UFO, encircled by beautifully landscaped borders and seating areas.

Having fallen into disrepair over the years, the roundabout was given a facelift in 2012, including the addition of colourful lights that illuminate the fountain after dark. In 2015, the UK-based Roundabout Appreciation Society bestowed upon it the prestigious accolade of Roundabout of the Year. It has even been featured on postcards and become somewhat of a tourist attraction in the city.
