Battery Point

WE DRIVE THROUGH BATTERY POINT

Battery Point is named after the battery of guns that were established here in the early 19th century, although it’s worth noting that these guns were primarily used for ceremonial salutes and were never actually engaged in repelling any invasions. The suburb is connected to Salamanca via Kelly’s Steps, a colonial-era walkway named after the explorer and whaler James Kelly.

Once considered a poor man’s village, Battery Point is now one of Hobart’s most prestigious suburbs, home to beautifully preserved sandstone and weatherstone cottages. Of particular note is Arthur’s Circus, a historical precinct with charming Georgian cottages surrounding a small park.

Hampden Road serves as Battery Point’s main thoroughfare and is lined with some of Hobart’s finest cafes and restaurants. It’s here that you’ll find Jackman & McRoss, a beloved artisan bakery, as well as stores selling antiques and locally made crafts.
