Cascade Brewery

Founded in 1824, Cascade Brewery is the oldest continually operating brewery in Australia and is a prominent landmark in South Hobart. Originally a sawmilling operation, the Cascade estate was established as a partnership by Macintosh and Degraves and is now designated on the Tasmanian Heritage Register.

Cascade stands out among Australian breweries in that it operates its own maltings. This allows the brewery to produce malt for its mainstream beers using locally sourced barley. In addition to beer, the brewery also produces a variety of non-alcoholic products, such as soft drinks.

One of the best ways to experience the Cascade Brewery is on a guided tour, which delves into the process of crafting one of Australia’s oldest beer recipes and includes a tasting flight of Cascade beers. If you’re more interested in the site’s history than its beer, you can participate in a historic tour to learn about the visionaries behind the brewery’s creation.
