Hobart Cenotaph

WE DRIVE PAST YOU CAN WALK UP FROM THE CRUISE TERMINAL

Located atop a gentle rise overlooking the Derwent River is the Hobart Cenotaph, which is the main commemorative military monument in Tasmania. Designed in the 1920s by the Hobart architectural firm Hutchinson and Walker, this striking Art Deco obelisk serves as an eloquent tribute to Tasmania's war dead. The Cenotaph was originally erected to honour the memory of soldiers who perished in World War I, with the inscription "Lest We Forget" on its facade. However, it has since been expanded to commemorate Tasmanians who served and sacrificed in all military conflicts that followed.

The Hobart Cenotaph sits above the former location of the Queen's Battery and it is here that the Tasmanian capital’s main Anzac Day commemoration services are held. On each of the four faces of the obelisk are the crests of the four service organisations - the Royal Australian Air Force, the Royal Australian Navy, the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces and the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps.
