Salamanca Place

WE DRIVE PAST. THIS IS A GOOD PLACE TO COME BACK TO AFTER THE TOUR AND A LITTLE OVER 5 MINUTES FROM THE CRUISE SHIP

Characterised by its magnificent sandstone buildings, Salamanca Place is a beautiful historical area and the setting for the Salamanca Market. Originally used as warehouses, many of its buildings have been transformed into restaurants, bars, galleries and craft shops showcasing Tasmanian wares.

Originally known as “The Cottage Green”, the name “Salamanca Place” pays homage to the 1812 Battle of Salamanca in Spain. It features several laneways and hidden courtyards that date back to the whaling era and only add to the area’s charm. In the 1990s, Salamanca Square was constructed behind the warehouses, with this public space now home to shops, restaurants and a centrepiece fountain.

While the Salamanca Market draws large numbers of tourists and locals alike on Saturdays, Salamanca Place is also a lively destination after dark. Its bars and eateries draw in diners and nighttime revellers, ensuring a lively ambiance throughout the evening. Salamanca Place is so significant in the cultural history of Hobart that it is featured as a property in the Australian version of Monopoly.
