Sullivans Cove

Sullivan’s Cove holds significant historical importance as it was the initial landing site when Hobart Town was established in the early 19th century. The exact landing site was a rocky island known as Hunter Island, which is now accessible via Hunter Street. Over time, the connection to the shore was developed and a building now stands directly above the former island.

While the first European settlement in the state was established a year earlier at Risdon Cove, this was eventually abandoned and its settlers relocated to join the community at Sullivan’s Cove. The cove was named in honour of John Sullivan, who served as the Permanent Under Secretary to the Colonies.

Sullivan’s Cove is now known locally as Macquarie Wharf and is the primary port for the city. Many of its original buildings have been preserved and its former sheds have been repurposed as recreational and tourism facilities. At its heart is Franklin Wharf where fishing and sailing boats dock. This is also the end point of the annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

Other areas of note within Sullivan’s Cove include:

Elizabeth Street Pier, which now houses restaurants, a bar and a function space, making it a popular hub for dining and entertainment in the city.

Princes Wharf Shed No. 1 was redeveloped in 2011 and is now known as PW1. It serves as a versatile event space and hosts both the Taste of Summer and Dark Mofo’s Winter Feast.

Princes Wharf Shed No. 2 was replaced in 2012 and is now home to the University of Tasmania's Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies. Hobart is one of five global Antarctica gateway cities and plays an important role in facilitating Antarctica-based research.

Brooke Street Pier was replaced in 2015 and is now home to a new ferry terminal where the Mona Roma departs for the Museum of Old and New Art. The ferry terminal also houses a cafe, a bar and several market stalls showcasing local artisans.

While cruise ships come and go from Macquarie Wharf Shed No. 2, Shed No. 1 has been transformed into a luxury hotel known as MACq 01.
