St. David’s Cathedral

Dominating the corner of Macquarie and Murray streets is St. David’s Cathedral, which is the mother-church for the Diocese of Tasmania. It was built in a Gothic Revival style on the designs of George Frederick Bodley before being officially consecrated in 1874.

St. David’s Cathedral is notable for its arcaded entrance and prominent tower built using stone from the Midlands town of Oatlands. Inside are magnificent stained-glass windows depicting saints, knights and kings, as well as an impressive organ built by London’s Bishop & Starr. Aside from its weekly services, the cathedral regularly hosts performances of both sacred and contemporary music.
