Mawson Huts

It was from Sullivan’s Cove that the SY Aurora departed for Antarctica over a century ago, with Douglas Mawson and his crew on board. The Mawson's Huts Replica Museum offers visitors a glimpse into the daily life of the explorers of the 1911-1914 Australasian Antarctic Expedition, transporting them back in time to the unforgiving setting of Cape Denison.

Despite the harsh conditions, the simple wooden huts served as a warm sanctuary for the expeditioners during their two overwintering stints and have been meticulously recreated opposite Franklin Wharf. Displays of scientific equipment, canned provisions and personal artefacts provide insights into how the explorers passed the time and furthered their research goals.
