Make it stand out

Princes Park

WE DRIVE PAST BUT CAN BE VISITED AFTER THE TOUR AS CLOSE TO THE CRUISE TERMINAL

Tucked just behind Salamanca is Prince's Park - a picturesque green space with landscaped garden beds and a ship-themed children’s playground. Originally part of the 1818-built Mulgrave Battery, it underwent a name change in 1855, becoming the Prince of Wales Battery, and was expanded to include the Prince Albert Battery situated higher up on the hill.

A semaphore station, erected in 1829, along with a signal mast were built above the Mulgrave Battery to facilitate communication with ships entering the river mouth. Through a series of relay masts, messages could be transmitted all the way to the Port Arthur penitentiary on the Tasman Peninsula. The semaphore station and signal mast still stand near Princes Park today.

With its sloping lawns, Princes Park is a popular spot to picnic in the summer months and enjoys wonderful views across the River Derwent.
