As an island state, the sea has played an important role in the history of Tasmania and this is celebrated at the Maritime Museum. It’s housed in the historic Carnegie Building and delves into the impact of the sea on the lives of Tasmanians and the rich maritime heritage of the region.

Inside the museum, visitors can explore informative exhibits on indigenous watercraft, early European explorers and Tasmania’s whaling past. It illustrates the crucial role that sailing and steamships played in the development of Tasmanian industries, particularly the export of raw materials and products like apples, minerals and timber. In addition to displaying vintage dinghies and boat-building tools, archaeological discoveries from shipwrecks are exhibited.
